This reverts commit b861bf8ddf, because according to @mdorman [1] this
change rendered his NixOS systems unbootable, and we probably don't want that.

Allow usage of list of strings instead of a comma-separated string
for filesystem options. Deprecate the comma-separated string style
with a warning message; convert this to a hard error after 16.09.
15.09 was just released, so this provides a deprecation period during
the 16.03 release.

It's not entirely clear why this happens, but sometimes /proc/1/exe
returns a bogus value, like
/ar3a3j6b9livhy5fcfv69izslhgk4gcz-systemd-217/lib/systemd/systemd. In
any case, we can just conservatively assume that we need to restart
systemd when this happens.
Fixes#10261.
Fixes references coming from the mdadm udev rules.
This addresses #12722 (mdadm udev rules have references to /usr/bin) but
still won't fix the warning, though (if we want to fix the warnings, we
will have to patch the udev rules generater in services/hardware/udev).
For common mdraid functionality, this shouldn't fix anything, because
the wrong references seem to only apply to containers, see these
(wrapped) lines from ${mdadm}/lib/udev/rules.d/63-md-raid-arrays.rules:
# Tell systemd to run mdmon for our container, if we need it.

ENV{MD_CONTAINER}=="?*",
PROGRAM="/usr/bin/readlink $env{MD_CONTAINER}",

This has broken remote SSH into initrd because ${cfg.shell} is not
expanded. Also, nsswitch is useless without libnss_files.so which
are installed by initrd-ssh.

Setting nixosVersion to something custom is useful for meaningful GRUB
menus and /nix/store paths, but actuallly changing it rebulids the
whole system path (because of `nixos-version` script and manual
pages). Also, changing it is not a particularly good idea because you
can then be differentitated from other NixOS users by a lot of
programs that read /etc/os-release.
This patch introduces an alternative option that does all you want
from nixosVersion, but rebuilds only the very top system level and
/etc while using your label in the names of system /nix/store paths,
GRUB and other boot loaders' menus, getty greetings and so on.
This hopefully fixes intermittent initrd failures where udevd cannot
create a Unix domain socket:
machine# running udev...
machine# error getting socket: Address family not supported by protocol
machine# error initializing udev control socket
machine# error getting socket: Address family not supported by protocol
The "unix" kernel module is supposed to be loaded automatically, and
clearly that works most of the time, but maybe there is a race
somewhere. In any case, no sane person would run a kernel without Unix
domain sockets, so we may as well make it builtin.

I can't imagine anyone who wanted to purge this module from his/her system,
so let's keep it simple, at least for now.
Previously this barfed with:

The most complex problems were from dealing with switches reverted in
the meantime (gcc5, gmp6, ncurses6).
It's likely that darwin is (still) broken nontrivially.
Clearly it would be the best if we'd directly generate mount units
instead of converting /etc/fstab. But in order to do that we need to
test it throughly so this approach is for the next stable release.
This fix however is intended for inclusion into release-14.12 and
release-15.09.
Using a simple regular expression unfortunately isn't sufficient for
proper mount unit name quoting/escaping and there is a utility in
systemd called systemd-escape which does nothing less than that.
Of course, using an external program to escape the unit name is way more
expensive and causes us to fork for each mount point.
But given that we already do quite a lot of forks just for unit starting
and stopping, I think it doesn't matter that much. Well, except if you
have a whole bunch of mount points.
However, if the latter is the case and you have thousands of mount
points, you probably have stumbled over this already if your mount point
contains a dash.
As for my motivation to fix this: I've stumbled on this while trying to
fix the "none" backend test for NixOps (see NixOS/nixops#350), where the
target machines use /nix/.ro-store and /nix/.rw-store as mount points.
The implementation we had so far did improperly escape it so those mount
points got the following unit files:
* nix-.ro-store.mount
* nix-.rw-store.mount
The correct names for these units are however:
* nix-.ro\x2dstore.mount
* nix-.rw\x2dstore.mount
So using systemd-escape now properly generates these names.

mmc_block and sdhci_acpi are both necessary for a Bay Trail Chromebook with an

out a way to check whether the mmc_block module is needed by just looking at

Option aliases/deprecations can now be declared in any NixOS module,
not just in nixos/modules/rename.nix. This is more modular (since it
allows for example grub-related aliases to be declared in the grub
module), and allows aliases outside of NixOS (e.g. in NixOps modules).
The syntax is a bit funky. Ideally we'd have something like:
options = {
foo.bar.newOption = mkOption { ... };
foo.bar.oldOption = mkAliasOption [ "foo" "bar" "newOption" ];
};
but that's not possible because options cannot define values in
*other* options - you need to have a "config" for that. So instead we
have functions that return a *module*: mkRemovedOptionModule,
mkRenamedOptionModule and mkAliasOptionModule. These can be used via
"imports", e.g.
imports = [
(mkAliasOptionModule [ "foo" "bar" "oldOption" ] [ "foo" "bar" "newOption" ]);
];
As an added bonus, deprecation warnings now show the file name of the
offending module.
Fixes#10385.
- systemd puts all into one output now (except for man),
because I wasn't able to fix all systemd/udev refernces
for NixOS to work well
- libudev is now by default *copied* into another path,
which is what most packages will use as build input :-)
- pkgs.udev = [ libudev.out libudev.dev ]; because there are too many
references that just put `udev` into build inputs (to rewrite them all),
also this made "${udev}/foo" fail at *evaluation* time
so it's easier to catch and change to something more specific
This way the binary gets stripped & rpath-shrinked etc. as usual.
We'd seem to get a runtime reference to gcc otherwise.
TODO: Maybe we should be able to set e.g. 'dontUnpack = true;'
to make this more pretty.
Adding the configuration option 'systemd.generators' to
specify systemd system-generators. The option allows to
either add new system-generators to systemd, or to over-
ride or disable the system-generators provided by systemd.
Internally, the configuration option 'systemd.generators'
maps onto the 'environment.etc' configuration option.
Having a convenience wrapper around 'environment.etc' helps
to group the systemd system-generator configuration more
easily with other 'systemd...' configurations.

When using extlinux-conf-builder in a nix build using chroots, the
following error message could be seen:

only legal value of $numGenerations in a nix build context).
Without a menu title, U-Boot's distro scripts just autoboot the first
entry by default.
When I initially wrote this, my board wasn't apparently running stock
U-Boot but had some local hacks saved in the U-Boot's environment
which made it always display the prompt.
When calling addEntry inside a subshell, the filesCopied array would
be updated only in the subshell's environment. This would only cause an
issue if no -g flag was passed to the script, causing no kernels
to be copied.

This solves the problem that modprobe does not know about $MODULE_DIR

Without this patch, one would have to use sudo -E (preserves environment
vars). But that option is reserved for sudo users with extra rights
(SETENV), so it's not a solution.
environment.sessionVariables are set by PAM, so they are included in the
environment used by sudo.

This module generates a /boot/extlinux/extlinux.conf bootloader
configuration file that is supported by e.g. U-Boot:

way (a single boot file generator, all boards booting via initrd like
x86) and with same boot menu functionality as GRUB has.

This reverts commit d170c98d13.
niksnut argues that we need smaller system closures, not bigger.
So users facing the trouble of getting gcc rebuilds after nix-collect-garbage
for any minimal nixos configuration change should use other means of
not losing the stdenv output.
One way is to keep one somewhere: nix-build -A stdenv -o stdenv '<nixpkgs>'.
Another may be to use nix.conf options like gc-keep-outputs, gc-keep-derivations
or env-keep-derivations.
This will help a lot on ARM, where nix-collect-garbage erases gcc; then, any
change to a small system config file requires rebuilding gcc again.
I don't know why it does not happen on x86. Maybe it just pulls the gcc from
hydra, if garbage is collected.
It boots, but some things still don't work:
1) Installation of DTBs
2) Boot of initrd
Booting still needs a proper config.txt in /boot, which could probably be
managed by NixOS.
During the refactor of the networkd stuff in f8dbe5f, a lot of the
options are now needed by systemd.nix as well as networkd.nix but
weren't moved by that commit as well.
For now, this fixes all networkd VM tests except for the macvlan one and
thus it should fix#7505 for at least DHCP-based configuration.

In f8dbe5f, the default value for networking unit "enabled" option
suddenly flipped to false. I have no idea of whether this happened by
accident, but I'm setting it to true again, because it essentially
breaks systemd networking support and we have systemd.network.enable to
have a "turn the world off" switch.
And of course, because the mentioned commit obviously wasn't done with
even a run of the simplest run of one of the network VM tests, we now
get an evaluation error if we switch useNetworkd to true.

Otherwise, the enabled -> disabled transition won't be handled
correctly (switch-to-configuration currently assumes that if a unit is
running and exists, it should be restarted).
Many bus clients get hopelessly confused when dbus-daemon is
restarted. So let's not do that.
Of course, this is not ideal either, because we end up stuck with a
possibly outdated dbus-daemon. But that issue will become irrelevant
in the glorious kdbus-based future.
Hopefully this also gets rid of systemd getting stuck after
dbus-daemon is restarted:

Since we restart all active target units (of which there are many),
it's hard to see the units that actually matter. So don't print that
we're starting target units that are already active.
‘nixos-rebuild dry-activate’ builds the new configuration and then
prints what systemd services would be stopped, restarted etc. if the
configuration were actually activated. This could be extended later to
show other activation actions (like uids being deleted).
To prevent confusion, ‘nixos-rebuild dry-run’ has been renamed to
‘nixos-rebuild dry-build’.
The PID 1 shell is executed as the last command in a sh invocation. Some
shells implicitly use exec for that, but the current busybox ash does not,
so the shell gets a wrong PID. Spell out the exec.
When gummiboot.timeout == null, the menu will still be skipped.
When gummiboot.timeout == 0, the menu will also be skipped.
The only way to show the menu 'indefinitely' is to show it a long time.
Now that dbus reload has been moved before restarting units,
the reload may fail if dbus has been stopped before.
The reload-or-restart will reload dbus if it's active,
otherwise start it.
During install, the bootloader script gets run inside a chroot after the
/etc/group bind-mount is unmounted. Since we're not doing any building,
this should be safe, but really nix should just not care if the group
does not exist when no build is needed.
Fixes#5494
The old boot.spl.hostid option was not working correctly due to an
upstream bug.
Instead, now we will create the /etc/hostid file so that all applications
(including the ZFS kernel modules, ZFS user-space applications and other
unrelated programs) pick-up the same system-wide host id. Note that glibc
(and by extension, the `hostid` program) also respect the host id configured in
/etc/hostid, if it exists.
The hostid option is now mandatory when using ZFS because otherwise, ZFS will
require you to force-import your ZFS pools if you want to use them, which is
undesirable because it disables some of the checks that ZFS does to make sure it
is safe to import a ZFS pool.
The /etc/hostid file must also exist when booting the initrd, before the SPL
kernel module is loaded, so that ZFS picks up the hostid correctly.
The complexity in creating the /etc/hostid file is due to having to
write the host ID as a 32-bit binary value, taking into account the
endianness of the machine, while using only shell commands and/or simple
utilities (to avoid exploding the size of the initrd).
The gummiboot-builder.py script is expecting the @timeout@ metavar to be
substituted for either an empty string (in the case where a user has
left the timeout unset) or the actual value set in the system
configuration.
However, the config.boot.loader.gummiboot.timeout option defaults to
'null', and due to the way pkgs.substituteAll works, the substitution
for '@timeout@' is _never_ set to the empty string. This causes the
builder script to put a bogus line into /boot/loader/loader.conf:
timeout @timeout@
Fix this by explicitly setting 'timeout' to the empty string when it's
unset in the system configuration.

/tmp cleaning is done by systemd rather than stage-2-init
enableEmergencyMode moved from systemd to seperate module
new option to mount tmp on tmpfs
new option to enable additional units shipped with systemd
We now track copied files in /etc/.clean. This is important, because
otherwise files that are removed from environment.etc will not
actually be removed from the file system. In particular, changing
users.extraUsers.<user>.openssh.authorizedKeys.keys to an empty list
would not cause /etc/ssh/authorized_keys.d/<user> to be removed, which
was a security issue.
It only needs to be started during boot. Starting it at other times
shouldn't hurt, except that if systemd-journald is restarting at the
same time, the latter might not have a SIGUSR1 signal handler
installed yet, so it might be killed by systemd-journal-flush. (At
least that's my theory about the dead systemd-journald instances in
the build farm...)
It's only needed during early boot (in fact, it's probably not needed
at all on NixOS). Restarting it is expensive because it does a sync()
of the root file system.
systemd escaping rules translate this into a string containing '\'
which is treated by some code paths as quoted, and by others as unquoted
causing the affected units to fail.
Restarting user@ instances is bad because it causes all user services
(such as ssh-agent.service) to be restarted. Maybe one day we can have
switch-to-configuration restart user units in a fine-grained way, but
for now we should just ignore user systemd instances.
Backport: 14.04
If /boot is a btrfs subvolume, it will be on a different device than /
but not be at the root from grub's perspective. This should be fixed in
a nicer way by #2449, but that can't go into 14.04.
This reverts commit 6eaced3582. Doesn't
work very well, e.g. if you actually have the FUSE module loaded. And
in any case it's already fixed in NixOps.
Otherwise, when switching from systemd 203 to 212, you get errors like:
Failed to stop remote-fs.target: Bad message
Failed to stop systemd-udevd-control.socket: Bad message
...
These fail to mount if you don't have the appropriate kernel support,
and this confuses NixOps' ‘check’ command. We should teach NixOps not
to complain about non-essential mount points, but in the meantime it's
better to turn them off.
This seems to have combined badly with the systemd upgrade, we'll revert
for now and revisit after the 14.04 branch.
