nixos/nsd: Don't override bind via nixpkgs.config
When generating values for the services.nsd.zones attribute using values
from pkgs, we'll run into an infinite recursion because the nsd module
has a condition on the top-level definition of nixpkgs.config.

While it would work to push the definition a few levels down, it will
still only work if we don't use bind tools for generating zones.

As far as I could see, Python support for BIND seems to be only needed
for the dnssec-* tools, so instead of using nixpkgs.config, we now
directly override pkgs.bind instead of globally in nixpkgs.

To illustrate the problem with a small test case, instantiating the
following Nix expression from the nixpkgs source root will cause the
mentioned infinite recursion:

  (import ./nixos {
    configuration = { lib, pkgs, ... }: {
      services.nsd.enable = true;
      services.nsd.zones = import (pkgs.writeText "foo.nix" ''
        { "foo.".data = "xyz";
          "foo.".dnssec = true;
        }
      '');
    };
  }).vm

With this change, generating zones via import-from-derivation is now
possible again.

shairport-sync: don't daemonize
This flag causes the shairport-sync server to attempt to daemonize, but it looks like systemd is already handling that. With the `-d` argument, shairport-sync immediately exits—it seems that something (systemd I'm guessing?) is sending it SIGINT or SIGTERM.

The [upstream systemd unit](https://github.com/mikebrady/shairport-sync/blob/master/scripts/shairport-sync.service.in#L10) doesn't pass `-d`.

ee14496ae2 nixos/dhcpcd: (try to) restart chrony in the exitHook
As the comment notes, restarts/exits of dhcpcd generally require
restarting the NTP service since, if name resolution fails for a pool of
servers, the service might break itself. To be on the safe side, try
restarting Chrony in these instances, too.

7b8d9700e1 nixos/chrony: don't emit initstepslew when servers is empty
Setting the server list to be empty is useful e.g. for hardware-only

2cb7f5fb1e consul: 0.9.3 -> 1.3.0.
Removes the old UI build tooling; it is no longer necessary
because as of 1.2.0 it's bundled into the server binary.
It doesn't even need to have JS built, because it's bundled into
the release commit's source tree (see #48714).

The UI is enabled by default, so the NixOS service is
updated to directly use `ui = webUi;` now.

725fcdef3f Fix hostapd's place in systemd dependency tree. (#45464)
* nat/bind/dhcp.service:
  Remove. Those services have nothing to do with a link-level service.

* sys-subsystem-net-devices-${if}.device:
  Add as BindsTo dependency as this will make hostapd stop when the
  device is unplugged.

* network-link-${if}.service:
  Add hostapd as dependency for this service via requiredBy clause,
  so that the network link is only considered to be established
  only after hostapd has started.

* network.target:
  Remove this from wantedBy clause as this is already implied from
  dependencies stacked above hostapd. And if it's not implied than
  starting hostapd is not required for this particular network
  configuration.

- Overridability: Default values can be overridden

0ce90d58cc nixos/chrony: clean up, rework to be a little closer to upstream
Most importantly, this sets PrivateTmp, ProtectHome, and ProtectSystem
so that Chrony flaws are mitigated, should they occur.

Moving to ProtectSystem=full however, requires moving the chrony key
files under /var/lib/chrony -- which should be fine, anyway.

This also ensures ConditionCapability=CAP_SYS_TIME is set, ensuring
that chronyd will only be launched in an environment where such a
capability can be granted.

12fa95f2d6 modules: HylaFAX server configuration
This commit adds the following
* the uucp user
* options for HylaFAX server to control startup and modems
* systemd services for HylaFAX server processes
  including faxgettys for modems
* systemd services to maintain the HylaFAX spool area,
  including cleanup with faxcron and faxqclean
* default configuration for all server processes
  for a minimal working configuration

Some notes:

* HylaFAX configuration cannot be initialized with faxsetup
  (as it would be common on other Linux distributions).
  The hylafaxplus package contains a template spool area.
* Modems are controlled by faxgetty.
  Send-only configuration (modems controlled by faxq)
  is not supported by this configuration setup.
* To enable the service, one or more modems must be defined with
  config.services.hylafax.modems .
* Sending mail *should* work:
  HylaFAX will use whatever is in
  config.services.mail.sendmailSetuidWrapper.program
  unless overridden with the sendmailPath option.
* The admin has to create a hosts.hfaxd file somewhere
  (e.g. in /etc) before enabling HylaFAX.
  This file controls access to the server (see hosts.hfaxd(5) ).
  Sadly, HylaFAX does not permit account-based access
  control as is accepts connections via TCP only.
* Active fax polling should work; I can't test it.
* Passive fax polling is not supported by HylaFAX.
* Pager transmissions (with sendpage) are disabled by default.
  I have never tested or used these.
* Incoming data/voice/"extern"al calls
  won't be handled by default.
  I have never tested or used these.

48f7778d99 dhcpcd service: order before network target
This reverts a change applied in PR #18491. When interfaces are
configured by DHCP (typical in a cloud environment), ordering after
network.target cause trouble to applications expecting some network to
be present on boot (for example, cloud-init is quite brittle when
network hasn't been configured for `cloud-init.service`) and on
shutdown (for example, collectd needs to flush metrics on shutdown).

When ordering after network.target, we ensure applications relying on
network.target won't have any network reachability on boot and
potentially on shutdown.

Therefore, I think ordering before network.target is better.

cd5e01edd9 ocserv: init at 0.12.1 (#42871)
`ocserv` is a VPN server which follows the openconnect protocol
(https://github.com/openconnect/protocol). The packaging is slightly
inspired by the AUR version
(https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/ocserv/).

This patch initializes the package written in C, the man pages and a
module for a simple systemd unit to run the VPN server. The package
supports the following authentication methods for the server:

* `plain` (mostly username/password)
* `pam`

The third method (`radius`) is currently not supported since `nixpkgs`
misses a packaged client.

The module can be used like this:

``` nix
{
  services.ocserv = {
    enable = true;
    config = ''
      ...
    '';
  };
}
```

The option `services.ocserv.config` is required on purpose to
ensure that nobody just enables the service and experiences unexpected
side-effects on the system. For a full reference, please refer to the
man pages, the online docs or the example value.

The docs recommend to simply use `nobody` as user, so no extra user has
been added to the internal user list. Instead a configuration like
this can be used:

```
run-as-user = nobody
run-as-group = nogroup
```

96190535e5 Revert "nixos: rename system.{stateVersion,defaultChannel} -> system.nixos.\1"
This reverts commit 095fe5b43d.

Pointless renames considered harmful. All they do is force people to
spend extra work updating their configs for no benefit, and hindering
the ability to switch between unstable and stable versions of NixOS.

Like, what was the value of having the "nixos." there? I mean, by
definition anything in a NixOS module has something to do with NixOS...

c00d17aae3 epmd: Introduce erlang port mapper daemon service
Having socket-activated epmd means that there always be only a single
instance managed centrally. Because Erlang also starts it
automatically if not available, and in worst case scenario 'epmd' can
be started by some Erlang application running under systemd. And then
restarting this application unit will cause complete loss of names in
'epmd' (if other Erlang system are also installed on this host).

E.g. see at which lengths RabbitMQ goes to recover from such
situations:
7741b37b1e/src/rabbit_epmd_monitor.erl (L36)

Having the only one socket-activated epmd completely solves this
problem.

nixos/bind: Allow to set extra options
BIND doesn't allow the options section (or any section I'd guess) to be
defined more than once, so whenever you want to set an additional option
you're stuck using weird hacks like this:

services.bind.forwarders = lib.mkForce [ "}; empty-zones-enable no; #" ];

This basically exploits the fact that values coming from the module
options aren't escaped and thus works in a similar vain to how SQL
injection works.

Another option would be to just set configFile to a file that includes
all the options, including zones. That obviously makes the configuration
way less extensible and more awkward to use with the module system.

To make sure this change does work correctly I added a small test just
for that. The test could use some improvements, but better to have a
test rather than none at all. For a future improvement the test could be
merged with the NSD test, because both use the same zone file format.

This change has been reviewed in #40053 and after not getting any
opposition, I'm hereby adding this to master.

380cdd8dd7 Add stubby resolver daemon service module (#38667)
* networking/stubby.nix: implementing systemd service module for stubby

This change implements stubby, the DNS-over-TLS stub resolver daemon.
The motivation for this change was the desire to use stubby's
DNS-over-TLS funcitonality in tandem with unbound, which requires
passing certain configuration parameters. This module implements those
config parameters by exposing them for use in configuration.nix.

* networking/stubby.nix: merging back module list

re-merging the module list to remove unecessary changes.

* networking/stubby.nix: removing unecessary capabilities flag

This change removes the unecessary flag for toggling the capabilities
which allows the daemon to bind to low ports.

* networking/stubby.nix: adding debug level logging bool

Adding the option to turn on debug logging.

* networking/stubby.nix: clarifying idleTimeout and adding systemd target

Improving docs to note that idleTimeout is expressed in ms. Adding the
nss-lookup `before' target to the systemd service definition.

* networking/stubby.nix: Restrict options with types.enum

This change restricts fallbackProtocol and authenticationMode to accept
only valid options instead of any list or str types (respectively). This
change also fixes typo in the CapabilityBoundingSet systemd setting.

* networking/stubby.nix: cleaning up documentation

Cleaning up docs, adding literal tags to settings, and removing
whitespace.

* networking/stubby.nix: fixing missing linebreak in comments

nixos/nsd: Allow to configure root zone
When trying to run NSD to serve the root zone, one gets the following
error message:

error: illegal name: '.'

This is because the name of the zone is used as the derivation name for
building the zone file. However, Nix doesn't allow derivation names
starting with a period.

So whenever the zone is "." now, the file name generated is "root"
instead of ".".

I also added an assertion that makes sure the user sets
services.nsd.rootServer, otherwise NSD will fail at runtime because it
prevents serving the root zone without an explicit compile-time option.

Tested this by adding a root zone to the "nsd" NixOS VM test.

7c90a86770 wireguard service: use scripts instead of ExecStarts/Stops
This is more in line with what other services do; also looks cleaner.
It changes configuration entries for pre-and post-hooks type to lines from
lists of strings which are more logical for them; coersion is provided for
backwards compatibility.

Finally, add several steps to improve robustness:

1. Load kernel module on start if not loaded;
2. Don't remove wireguard interface on start; it is removed on service stop. If
   it's not something is wrong.

bd24b3addd nixos: add the strongswan-swanctl service
The strongswan-swanctl systemd service starts charon-systemd. This implements a IKE daemon
very similar to charon, but it's specifically designed for use with systemd. It uses the
systemd libraries for a native integration.

Instead of using starter and an ipsec.conf based configuration, the daemon is directly
managed by systemd and configured with the swanctl configuration backend.

See: https://wiki.strongswan.org/projects/strongswan/wiki/Charon-systemd

Note that the strongswan.conf and swantctl.conf configuration files are automatically
generated based on NixOS options under services.strongswan-swanctl.strongswan and
services.strongswan-swanctl.swanctl respectively.

fe4f4de1c9 strongswan module: make it work with ipsec l2tp
l2tp saves its secrets into /etc/ipsec.d but strongswan would not read
them. l2tp checks for /etc/ipsec.secrets includes /etc/ipsec.d and if
not tries to write into it.

Solution:
Have the strongswan module create /etc/ipsec.d and /etc/ipsec.secrets
when networkmanager_l2tp is installed.
Include /etc/ipsec.secrets in
/nix/store/hash-strongswan/etc/ipsec.secrets so that it can find l2tp
secrets.

Also when the ppp 'nopeerdns' option is used, the DNS resolver tries to
write into an alternate file /etc/ppp/resolv.conf. This fails when
/etc/ppp does not exist so the module creates it by default.

Also, if we don't rely on bootstrap, the extra lua deps of kresd could
be dropped by default, but let's not do that now, as the difference in
closure size is only ~4 MB, and there may be other use cases than
running the package as nixos service this way.

104de603cb networkmanager: remove restart after suspend from resume
In commit ec9dc73 restarting NetworkManager after resume from
suspend/hibernate was introduced.

When I initially switch to NixOS I started noticing a high delay between
wakeup and re-connecting to WiFi & wired networks. The delay increased
from a few seconds (on my previous distro, same software stack) to
almost half a minute with NixOS.

I (locally) applied the change in this commit a few weeks ago and tested
since then. The notebook/mobile device experience has improved a lot.
Reconnects are as before switching to NixOS.

Issue #24401 could be related to this. Since I am not using KDE/plasma5
I can only guess…

15b7e102b6 Safer defaults for immutable znc config (#30155)
* Safer defaults for immutable znc config

I just lost all the options I configured in ZNC, because the mutable config was overwritten.
I accept any suggestions on the way to implement this, but overwriting a mutable config by default seems weird. If we want to do this, we should ensure that ZNC does not allow to edit the config via the webmin when cfg.mutable is false.

* Do not backup old config files.

There seems to be little need for backups if mutable becomes a voluntary opt-out.

* fixup

We now wait for dhcpcd to acquire a lease but dhcpcd is restarted on

also be restarted together with dhcpcd in case both services were

dd50575d5a znc: fix openFirewall option
The current version is broken:
- there's no `openFirewall` attribute directly in the `cfg` set
- the `port` option is an attribute of the `confOptions` set

I used the proper attribute for the firewall port and moved the `openFirewall`
option directly up to the `services.znc` set, as it's rather a general option
for the whole service than a znc-specific option (which are located inside the
`confOptions` set).

99f759de1c Revert "nixos: add option for bind to not resolve local queries (#29503)"
This reverts commit 670b4e29adc16e0a29aa5b4c126703dcca56aeb6. The change
added in this commit was controversial when it was originally suggested
in https://github.com/NixOS/nixpkgs/pull/29205. Then that PR was closed
and a new one opened, https://github.com/NixOS/nixpkgs/pull/29503,
effectively circumventing the review process. I don't agree with this
modification. Adding an option 'resolveLocalQueries' to tell the locally
running name server that it should resolve local DNS queries feels
outright nuts. I agree that the current state is unsatisfactory and that
it should be improved, but this is not the right way.

nixos: add option for bind to not resolve local queries (#29503)
When the user specifies the networking.nameservers setting in the
configuration file, it must take precedence over automatically
derived settings.

The culprit was services.bind that made the resolver set to
127.0.0.1 and ignore the nameserver setting.

This patch adds a flag to services.bind to override the nameserver
to localhost. It defaults to true. Setting this to false prevents the
service.bind and dnsmasq.resolveLocalQueries settings from
overriding the users' settings.

Also, when the user specifies a domain to search, it must be set in
the resolver configuration, even if the user does not specify any
nameservers.

This commit was accidentally merged to 17.09 but was intended for

radicale: 1.1.4 -> 2.1.2
This commit readds and updates the 1.x package from 1.1.4 to 1.1.6 which
also includes the needed command for migrating to 2.x

The module is adjusted to the version change, defaulting to radicale2 if
stateVersion >= 17.09 and radicale1 otherwise. It also now uses
ExecStart instead of the script service attribute. Some missing dots at
the end of sentences were also added.

I added a paragraph in the release notes on how to update to a newer
version.

4ce76d9e1a ddclient nixos module: follow best practice for running daemons
Couple of changes:

 - move home to /var/lib/ddclient so we can enable ProtectSystem=full
 - do not stick binary into systemPackages as it will only run as a daemon
 - run as dedicated user/group
 - document why we cannot run as type=forking (output is swallowed)
 - secure things by running with ProtectSystem and PrivateTmp
 - .pid file goes into /run/ddclient
 - let nix create the home directory instead of handling it manually
 - make the interval configurable

```Tinc```'s pid file has more info than just a pid
so ```systemd``` fails to parse it.
It results in long (re)start times when ```systemd``` waits for a correct pid file to appear.
b27d8c5d0a nixos/mosquitto: Fix instructions for password gen
Fixes https://github.com/NixOS/nixpkgs/issues/27996.
Updates instructions for generating hashes passwords for use in a
Mosquitto password file.  Using `mosquitto_passwd` to generate these
hashes is a little less convenient, but the results are more likely to
be compatible with the mosquitto daemon.
As far as I can tell, the hashes generated with `mkpassd` did not work
as intended.  But this may have been hidden by another bug:
https://github.com/NixOS/nixpkgs/issues/27130.
66b07e41e6 nixos/mosquitto: Add checkPasswords option
Related to https://github.com/NixOS/nixpkgs/issues/27130.
Adds an option to NixOS configuration option to have Mosquitto use the
password file that it generates.  When this option is false the
Mosquitto server will accept login attempts with any username and any
password.  This option defaults to false because this matches the
behavior of the service prior to the introduction of this option.
When the `services.mosquitto.checkPasswords` is true, the server will
only accept valid usernames and passwords.
e355f7044d wireguard: add per-peer routing table option
This adds a convenient per-peer option to set the routing table that associated routes are added to. This functionality is very useful for isolating interfaces from the kernel's global routing and forcing all traffic of a virtual interface (or a group of processes, via e.g. "ip rule add uidrange 10000-10009 lookup 42") through Wireguard.
b09d036342 Strongswan after network-online instead of network
The systemd service file shipped with strongswan has strongswan started after `network-online`. It turns out that this is for good reason: failure to connect on boot otherwise.
See this thread on the mailing list, which my colleague initiated after finding that our NixOS strongswan config wouldn't connect on boot:
https://lists.strongswan.org/pipermail/users/2017-January/010359.html
Tested on a local config (which has the strongswan service config overridden).
